Review of Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy: “The Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is amazing!...”
The Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is amazing! The service was excellent, rooms were clean, beds comfortable, and even the bathroom and shower was great. We really loved the courtyards with the beautiful orange trees. The safety inside the hotel was also a plus.
We arrived early on our first morning and even though check in wasn't until the afternoon, out room was ready for us!! The breakfast was delicious...eggs, breads, yogurt, cereal, juices of every variety, cappuccinos, coffee, there was something for everyone's taste. It is a great location in the Trastevere, near a lot of restaurants and cafes and not too far from excellent shopping. We felt very safe in the Trastevere neighborhood as well. I will recommend this hotel to everyone I know that is going to Rome and Italy!
-- Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy --
We came to Rome for a business meeting and decided to start are Rome trip with some sightseeing. We loved Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy. The staff were courteous, warm and helpful. The bed was firm and comfortable. (I Have a neck injury and this is very important to me). The location was perfect. We were there 4 nights, and then transferred to a high-dollar Waldorf Astoria property in Rome to attend the meeting. It could not compare with Santa Maria Hotel. I will definitely stay there again.
The only down side of our stay in Trastevere was when we went to a restaurant (recommended on the Internet) and we were charged 100 Euros for a meal which we did not get. We should have stuck with the restaurants recommended by the hotel staff.

We loved the location of the Santa Maria Hotel in Trastevere, an easy walk across the Tiber river to historical Rome. The Trastevere is a lively but laid-back neighborhood, an off the beaten track, but not out in the sticks. The Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is on a tiny side street just a few steps away from the Piazza Santa Maria, with its beautiful Basilica Santa Maria.
Our hotel room was a little on the small side, but clean and quiet, and looking out onto a lovely courtyard (where they serve breakfast when the weather is good). Breakfast was good, with eggs and cold meats as well as the usual breads, and excellent coffee, of course! Staff were helpful without being intrusive. It is not 'full service' hotel, there is no restaurant, a limited bar, no health club or gift shop, but for our Rome vacation travel, we preferred a small hotel with character over an impersonal franchise. We would definitely stay at Santa Maria Hotel Rome Italy again.
Review of Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy: “you are reading your last review because you have found your place...”
We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy for 4 nights in Feb 2009. A very quaint hotel (quite different from the normal hotel chains in Rome). The actual hotel is elegant and well decorated and the rooms have a chalet feel to them as each room opens up onto a central courtyard.
It has all the mod cons one would expect, the negatives were that our Superior room was a bit dark with only one small window, it becomes claustrophobic when spending too much time inside. Also, they don't allow any ironing in the room or personal food and beverages put into the fridge, so perhaps not ideal for a longer stay in Rome. The double bed in our room was laid with 2 single mattresses so there was a dip down the center of the bed.
There is one computer in the main hotel lounge, which is free to use, but there is no internet in the rooms. There is a bar but is often unmanned and we had to ask for it to be opened. All the staff are friendly and helpful and the central patio is very picturesque with its orange trees.
The Trastevere area is quite central, and allowed us to walk to all the main sites i.e. The Vatican museums, St Peters, Roman Colosseum, Roman Forums, Bocca della Verità Square, Pantheon square, Spanish steps (Piazza di Spagna) etc... and there are plenty of excellent restaurants within minutes of the hotel's front door. So for us it was a very pleasant stay.
I would definitely recommend the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy.

Good people, if you're looking for a great hotel and you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of hotels in Central Rome you are reading your last review because you have found your place.
My wife and I stayed at this quaint hotel, The Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy in early January 2009. A former cloister it is located in the Trastevere area of Rome which is across the Tiber River (Trastevere actually mean 'across the Tiber') and very close to all the major Rome tourist sites (Roman Colisseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, etc.) It is a very easy walk to any of these sites. You may have to walk a little further than if you had stayed in central Spanish Steps area or perhaps the Pantheon area, but then you would miss out on great views of the Tiber River, excellent night social life pubs and restaurants, and an authentic Roman neighborhood experience. Also, Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is an EASY bus ride on the Number 23 to The Vatican and st Peters. The walk to the Rome Colisseum is only about 30 minutes and the walk to The Vatican is also about 30 minutes in the other direction.
Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is an oasis in the middle of Trastevere. The Trastevere part of Rome is less commercial and has been described as crusty or gritty (I wouldn't know why) but don't be scared off by these descriptions. If we had stayed in any of the other Rome hotels we passed along a more beaten path, we would have missed this experience. The area around the Santa Maria hotel has narrow cobbled stone streets and at night is very well lit and very safe, which is a concern for some people when they go to a foreign city like Rome.
Once you enter the green gate from the street and walk down the ivy-covered wall that leads to the front door, you feel like you are in a different world. It is secluded quiet inviting and comfortable. If we had been at Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy with warmer weather we would have spent more time hanging out in the courtyard after a long day of sightseeing in Rome. Mid January isn't prime hanging out weather in Rome.
The hotel rooms are comfortable and clean. They are not huge but how big a room does a monk or a tourist in Rome need? The bathrooms are modern and clean and the water pressure in the shower is hard and relaxing. You are supplied with fresh towels everyday and there is also a safe in the room.
The Santa Maria hotel provides breakfast in the morning from 7:30 Am until 10 Am. Everything from pastries, yogurts, cereals and fruits to eggs and breads. There is also a choice of juice.
The hotel has a computer with internet access which I think you can only use after noon. Not sure why.
Trastevere is also a good place to find food. The hotel staff is good at recommending restaurants in Trastevere. You must try either Taverna Trilussa or ai Fionaroli. (I'm going from memory here on the names but I think I'm close on the spelling). It seems like I should put some minuses about the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy because no hotel ever gets it exactly right. For us, however, it was a perfect little place with helpful, courteous staff and no problems.
I highly recommend Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy to anyone heading to Rome and wanting a quiet, clean place to stay. Also, you'll love hearing the church bells in the neighborhood. A nice touch.
Review of Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy: “We found prices to be much less in Trastevere...”
We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy based on some Hotel reviews. We found prices to be much less in Trastevere (food, drink, souvenirs, lodging) than we experienced in Piazza Navono, Veneto, and Piazza di Spagna. We would definitely return to Trastevere and the Santa Maria hotel.
.Pros's: For 170 Euros/night for a double room including a fairly substantial breakfast and evening snacks (excluding drinks) this Rome hotel was good value. I e-mailed the hotel to make reservations for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners, and the hotel graciously made arrangements which they confirmed back by e-mail.
The rooms are cosy clean, with good fresh towels (no washcloths, as is usual in Rome and Italy.) Many, many restaurants, pizzerias, and trattorias close at hand. Reception and breakfast staff all spoke good English. We arrived around 10:30 am, and were allowed to check into our room early plus were offered coffee and snacks from the breakfast table. We felt safe, as the streets were full of people at all hours, and there were also mounted police.
Con's: Thin dividing walls meant we could hear the guest in the room next to us typing late at night. When our neighbors staggered in after midnight, we heard every word. Take earplugs to Rome if you sleep lightly. The rooms have flat-screen televisions, but no clocks. We asked the hotel if they could reconfirm my reservation with Rome Cabs (by e-mail from the US,) but the receptionist said he "could only call his own taxi service", which at 55 Euros to Fiumicino is much more expensive than Rome Cabs at 45 Euros or the flat/fixed Rome Taxi rate of 40 Euros.) I was stunned by the attitude, since his colleagues had been so helpful with rest of our reservations. The graffiti in the Trastevere area is overwhelming, and the locals seem happy to throw trash anywhere.
Review of Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy: “I have already stayed three times at the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy!...”
I have already stayed three times at the Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy, in the Trastevere area of Rome, and this simple fact speaks for itself. The hotel is perfectly located, in an extremely quiet area of Trastevere and Rome, yet at walking distance from the most romantic places in Rome. From this famous and colorful "Trastevere", you are five minutes from La Bocca Della Verità, Piazza Farnese or Campo de Fiori, ten minutes from Piazza Navona or The Pantheon, fifteen minutes from Fontana di Trevi (Trevi fountain) or Castel Sant 'Angelo and St Peters Basilica, and twenty minutes from Piazza di Spagna. The nicest shopping avenues in Rome (Via Del Corso, Via Condotti, Via Cola di Rienzo) are also within walking distances, but trams, buses and la metropolitano are definitely very convenient as well.
The Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy is an ancient renovated cloister, with 21 romantic rooms (I tried three rooms so far, and they were all very romantic and cosy) surrounding a nice garden with orange trees (which explains why I like to stay in this hotel at Christmas times). For such a quality time in Rome, the prices are amazingly reasonable, I got a duplex room for 77 Euros per night per person (for two people), with a wonderful breakfast included.
Needless to say, I'll be back next year !
-- Hotel Santa Maria Rome Italy --
This is a small hotel in Trastevere, about ten minutes' walk from the Tiber and twenty minutes from St Peter's. It is a very quiet neighborhood of Rome with a secured locked door leading to the reception from a small street. The beautiful Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is just round the corner. The rooms are single story and arranged around central courtyards with orange trees - very attractive.
We stayed in a junior suite with our two children for three nights before Christmas. We paid 250 Euros per night inclusive of tax and breakfast, and got 10% off for paying cash. The room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was good (scrambled eggs, bread, cereals, cold meats and fruits, with excellent coffee), with a free light buffet at 5.30 pm. The location is very convenient, all the central Rome tourist attractions are within walking distance. The staff were friendly and helpful. No need to use their limo service from the airport, the fare is capped at 30 Euros from Ciampino Airport and 40 Euros from Fiumicino (Rome International Airport).
