Helpful articles about the Vatican City Rome area...

The Vatican City area consists mostly of the Vatican City and Castel St. Angelo. The place to search for Rome vacation rentals and hotels near the Vatican would be upstream of the Vatican and Castel St Angelo, basically heading away from central Rome.

It is true that you will find more Rome hotel deals (especially out of season) in the Vatican area than you would closer to other central Rome areas.
(Find out more about what periods of the year are considered out of season for hotels in Central Rome.)

The area may not be as pedestrian friendly as perhaps the Campo de Fiori or Navona areas, with few green areas or roads closed to traffic, but it has its own charms. The nicest area to stroll around is in the park which surrounds Castel Sant' Angelo. There is also a market between the Tevere (Tiber river) and Castel' Sant Angelo and usually some sort of activities (outdoor ice-skating, music and dancing etc.)

If you are touring Rome by car you should keep in mind that parking is a challenge in the Vatican City Rome area and traffic is intense.
There are numerous commercial outlets and opportunities to shop. Staying here has the benefit of close proximity to the Vatican City, Castel St. Angelo and the three Metro stops (see the map above).

Rome tourist buses: Most of the Rome tourist buses have a stop in front of St Peter's square on Via della Cociliazione. Why not hop on there, the Rome tourist buses are a great introduction to the city and the easiest way to find your bearings and choose your must-dos for your next lap around.

Shopping in the Vatican City Rome area: Vini, Vidi, VISA!

The best area for shopping in Rome is the Via Cola di Rienzo road, it stretches from the Piazza Risorgimento (above Vatican City on my map) all the way across the Tevere towards Piazza del Popolo.
It has something for everyone and there are certainly no shortage of brands. You won't be alone shopping here, Via Cola di Rienzo is very popular.

Food and Restaurants in the Vatican City Rome area.

The Vatican City area is not that big and you will find most restaurants, pubs, cafès and eateries within easy walking distance of Viale Giulio Cesare and Via Cola di Rienzo.
