The Vatican City Rome: Hotels, Sites, Maps

The Vatican City area consists mostly of the Vatican City and Castel St. Angelo. The place to search for Rome vacation rentals and hotels near the Vatican would be upstream of the Vatican and Castel St Angelo, basically heading away from central Rome.

It is true that you will find more Rome hotel deals (especially out of season) in the Vatican area than you would closer to other central Rome areas.

The Vatican area may not be as pedestrian friendly as perhaps the Campo de Fiori or Navona areas, with few green areas or roads closed to traffic, but it has its own charms. The nicest area to stroll around in is the park that encircles Castel Sant' Angelo. There is also a market between the Tevere (Tiber river) and Castel' Sant Angelo and usually some sort of activities (outdoor ice-skating, music and dancing etc.)

If you are touring Rome by car you should keep in mind that parking is a challenge in the Vatican City area and traffic is intense.
On the plus side - there are numerous commercial outlets and opportunities to shop. Staying here has the benefit of close proximity to the Vatican City, Castel St. Angelo and the three Metro stops (see the map above).

Getting to and from the Vatican City Rome area.

Rome Metro: There are 3 Metro stations to choose from:

  • Lepanto
  • Ottaviano
  • Cipro

All take you across the Tevere towards Piazza del Popolo and then Piazza di Spagna and Termini Station (The main station). For more information about the Metro and the location of the stops see my dedicated page on the Rome Metro.

Rome buses:

  • The No. 81 takes you from Piazza Risorgimento (next to the Vatican) to Piazza Venezia, via Piazza del Popolo.
  • No 40 goes from Via della Conciliazione to the Roman Forum.
  • The 116 Electric bus goes from Borgo Santo Spirito (Parallel to Via della Conciliazione) across the Tevere and zigzags its way through the Navona and Pantheon area.

For more about the buses in Rome see my dedicated page Rome buses and Rome public transport.

Rome taxi: There is a main taxi rank at the Piazza del Risorgimento. (Click on the Rome street map above and Look for the big "T" for Taxi.)

vatican city rome and tourist buses
Rome tourist buses: Most of the Rome tourist buses have a stop in front of St Peter's square on Via della Conciliazione. Why not hop on there, the Rome tourist buses are a great introduction to the city. They allow you to get your bearings, highlight the tourist attractions that interest you (I suggest you plan this, if you stop off at the first point of interest you may later get overwhelmed), and then select the ones that most interest you on your next lap around.

If you haven't read about it on my site already then ATAC public transportation in Rome site has a great tool to calculate the quickest route from point A to point B anywhere in Rome (using public transport). When you arrive at the website click on the English language option to the right. Fill in your departure address and arrival address.

Shopping in the Vatican City Rome area: Vini, Vidi, VISA!

The best area for shopping in Rome is the Via Cola di Rienzo road, it stretches from the Piazza Risorgimento (above Vatican City on my map) all the way across the Tevere towards Piazza del Popolo.
It has something for everyone (this is no boast...) and there are certainly no shortage of brands. You won't be alone shopping here, Via Cola di Rienzo is very popular.

Food and Restaurants in the Vatican City Rome area.

The Vatican City area is not that big and you will find most restaurants, pubs, cafes and eateries within easy walking distance of Viale Giulio Cesare and Via Cola di Rienzo.
