Lucky for you, compared to Italy hotel bookings, a much smaller percentage of tourists to Italy and Florence consider renting an apartment. You may find good value Florence apartment rentals still available in high demand areas and even during peak tourist season!

Also to consider is that eating out frequently at Florence Restaurants can damage the budget, and having your own cooking facilities can be a real blessing.

A Florence Italy apartment rental will, generally speaking, be a lot quieter, more private and certainly more spacious (one of the most common tourist complaints in Italy is about the small size of hotel rooms.)

Apartment Rental Florence Italy: possible information to confirm with your Florence rental agent:

Does your Florence apartment have air conditioning! Florence can get really hot during the summer months with little or no breeze blowing through Florence city center. Many Florence apartment rentals have air conditioning but do you want to be the one without?

Heating in Winter? December, January and February can chill the bones of the most fanatical Florence tourists. Do check whether your Florence rental apartment has heating and who controls the heating. In some apartment blocks in Florence the heating is not controlled by the individual apartments but rather by the "building" and comes on twice a day (mornings and evenings) for a preset duration.

Florence Italy rental apartments: Tips and other things to check:

  • Ask for a quiet apartment, and if possible one that does not face a busy street or a square (although quiet apartments in Florence are the exception rather than the rule.)

  • If you intend to do some home cooking or to try out those newly learned Florentine recipes confirm how complete the cooking facilities are?

  • What floor is the apartment on and does the building have a lift. (Many of the older buildings throughout Italy have no lifts.)

  • Is there enough light in the apartment?

  • If you need to make regular phone calls check that the apartment has a land line.

  • Is there any renovation work happening near the apartment?

  • If you are traveling to Florence by car you should enquire as to whether there are any parking facilities near the apartment.

  • Does the bathroom(s) have a bath or a shower?

  • If you have a late flight into Florence check whether there are extra charges for meet up and key collection after working hours?

  • How often are the apartments maintained/cleaned and the linen and towels changed?

  • NB: How far is the apartment from the rental agent's office?

  • Do you meet at your Florence rental apartment or at the rental agent's office? (You'll be surprised how many times folks think they're meeting at the apartment when instead they meet at the office.)

  • If you meet at the rental agent's office do they then provide transport to the apartment? (This is generally not the case in Italy).

  • Finally, ask the Florence agent to confirm all of your enquiries (and information not on their web site) in writing!

If you are lucky enough to discover and experience the incomparable Palazzo Alfani as we did, you will then be able to understand my awe at what the Alfani's have contributed to create one of the most beautiful luxurious apartments I have had the pleasure of residing in during our stay in Firenze. It is really that lovely and then some! Francesca, the gracious proprietress, was ever accommodating and gave excellent suggestions for Florence restaurants and making taxi reservations and other helpful info. It is as good as it gets!
I was almost hesitant to let other people in on this treasure (that we and the many lucky guests who have also had the pleasure of discovering) in fear of not being able to get in the next time we travel to Florence! But see for yourself...(without exaggeration) the Palazzo Alfani is a most splendidly wonderful place to stay!

We had not have chosen to visit Florence in July/August as we find Italy too hot at this time of the year but our visit was to attend a family wedding. The apartment that we rented at the Palazzo Alfani al David had air conditioning in the bedroom, lounge-dining area and the kitchen. Without it the heat would have been unbearable. The kitchen is quite adequate for preparing simple meals and there is a mini-market in the street just outside. We used the Florence public transport and most tourist destinations in the city can be reached from the Piazza San Marco at the end of the street. There are many restaurants and cafes close at hand. Our apartment, which was at the rear of the building, overlooked a small shared garden (not accessible) and was very quiet (a rarity in Italy). We would definitely stay at the Palazzo Alfani again.

This was our first visit to Florence and also to Italy, and we would certainly stay at the Palazzo Alfani again if we came back. Francesca, the manageress, was very welcoming and friendly, and she speaks good English! The Florence Italy rental apartment was excellent value for money - far far more spacious than what we would have got for the same amount for a hotel room in Florence. Our room was facing the garden and with the windows closed there was no city noise! It does get a bit hectic out front, so I imagine the street-facing rooms would not be as peaceful. The rental apartment was tastefully decorated, with nice antique furniture; a decent air con system; wide screen TV (if you really want to watch Italian TV), the kitchen has basic equipment, fine for preparing some pasta or something. This Florence Italy rental apartment is within easy reach of all of the Florence tourist attractions - the Duomo is about a 5 minutes' walk away. There is an excellent ice cream and granita shop - Gelaterie Carabe - only 2 minutes down the road. Don't be taken in by the flashier, double-the-price touristy places closer to the Duomo! We can also recommend the Mercato Centrale for your food shopping, and Frescobaldi (just off Piazza Signoria) for dinner/supper - an excellent alternative to the touristy nonsense just around the corner. All in all we'd highly recommend Palazzo Alfani as a Florence Italy rental apartment.

Francesca, the proprietress, was very welcoming and helpful, and we were very grateful that our late arrival was not a problem. She also allowed us access to the flat on our departure day because of no immediate arrival of guests. The low grade of competence for employees is given - we found a pair of used ladies pants on the sitting room floor! Most likely a slip-up, as the apartment was very clean and beautifully decorated and furnished, and I wouldn't want to put anyone off by having mentioned it.
Our general experience was very comfortable, though a kettle or small pot for making tea would have been helpful - for us English guests. I would also have liked an iron and ironing board, although I'm sure if we had asked it would not have been a problem.
Going out of the front door in the mornings was quirky, there were people crowding the exit and the street - the Academia entrance is opposite. The front rooms may be noisy during the day but by evening the street returns to a quiet backwater in the heart of a very busy city. A short walk to the bottom of the street and you are at the Duomo. The owners recommendations for restaurants were good, I didn't see a book for comments and tips by guests in the apartment, but have found such very helpful. I have no hesitation in recommending the Palazzo Alfani as your Florence Italy rental apartment and would choose to book it again should the opportunity arise.

The Villa Lucrezia, a large apartment, the type of apartment that makes you feel at home. Very clean and comfortable. Hot water is good. Well furnished with free internet! Two air-conditioners. A caretaker that lives in the building and gives you full assistance. There is a good supermarket only 5 minutes of walk. Buses take about 10 minutes to the historical center of Florence. Price was also very good. CONGRATULATIONS.

Compared to previous Italian holiday apartments we had, the Villa Lucrezia was the best relation of price and service we experienced. We rented an apartment in Lucca two years earlier without parking space and a lot less quality and space for the same price.
The apartment was clean, well equipped, with high quality furniture and very stylish. The service person as well as the owner took good care of us and were very friendly. Infrastructure is great. There are many Bus lines around the corner, playgrounds 100m away from the house and another one in a big park (Parco delle Cascine, 10 minutes to walk), if you are with kids.

Very nice, very clean, well maintained apartment. The Villa Lucrezia apartment had a nice kitchen, modern bathroom with many amenities. There was milk and water in the small refrigerator. There were also cookies and snacks in the kitchen upon arrival. The room was very quiet with air conditioning that actually worked. There was a computer in the lobby for the guests. The man that greeted us was very nice (with limited English), although he tried very hard to help us. We were unable to find the laundromat that he said was near the apartment. Overall, the Villa Lucrezia was one of the nicest rental apartments we had during our three week stay in Europe and Italy.

From: NB, South Africa
Date of Stay: May, 2008
The Villa Lucrezia apartment was spacious, and clean and catered to our needs. The apartment was quite far from the historical center of Florence, however, it was one short trip on the number 17 bus (the bus-stop is close to Villa Lucrezia) and we were there. Some juice, milk and pastries were also available in the flat. Outside Villa Lucrezia there is a cute fruit and vegetable market. We had a little trouble with the credit card machine when settling the bill, but after a while it was sorted out. We would recommend staying at Villa Lucrezia, we found it good value for money.
